现代英文选评注

《现代英文选评注》收入四十余位英美作家的文章，加以夏济安先生细密周详的评注，由夏志清先生校对。《现代英文选评注》是学习英文最好的课外读物，选文内容有趣，风格清新，对原文难词难句及章节结构均有深入浅出的阐释，读者不但可加深对原文的理解，亦能欣赏原文修辞之精微，领会作者雕词琢句的苦心。

夏济安，江苏吴县人（1916～1965）。上海光华大学英文系毕业，留校任教。嗣赴内地，先后在西安、昆明西南联大及北京大学教授英文；来台后任教台湾大学外语系。1955年春赴美，就读印第安那大学，半年后返国，翌年主编《文学杂志》，提倡现实主义文学，介绍西方文学和文艺理论。1959年再度赴美，于西雅图华盛大学及伯克利加州大学任教并作研究。著有《夏济安选集》、《民国三十五年夏济安日记》、《莫斯科的寒夜》（小说译本）及The Gateof Darkness等书。

Night fell. The darkness was thin， like some sleazy dress that has been worn and worn for manywinters and always lets the cold through to the bones. Then the moon rose. A farm lay quite visible，like a white stone in water， among the stretches of deep woods in their colorless dead leaf.黑夜比作一件不能御寒的敝衣……田庄之在月色之中，犹如水中白石，比说“月色如水”要高明一筹。As he walked slowly back from the campus to his house in the late afternoons or early evenings ofspring， he would try to compose the dedication， saying the words aloud to himself as he looked up atthe paling， peach-colored sky beyond the newly leafed branches. “嫩芽初绽，树叶新绿，是状“春”也，霞艳似桃，薄瞑徐合，是状“夕”也；用一介词beyond，则天在树外，红绿相映，夕阳春光，各得其所。如易beyond为and，则立刻化立体为平面，化图画为剪贴，文趣索然矣。”
